Written on the 2007 Alaska to Brazil expedition
So far…
Well the Canadian Rockies certainly live up to their reputation. They are truly magnificent. We entered into Jasper and travelled through to Lake Louise, Banff, and Kootenay. Stopping off to view the wildlife and spectacular scenery throughout. Lake Louise is so densely populated by bears at this time of year that ‘tented camping’ is only allowed on a site protected with electric fencing. We soon found out why when we saw a grizzly bear and her 2 cubs peacefully grazing less than 10 meters away. So ‘we’ were the ones fenced in for a change and the wildlife allowed to roam free – they way it should be more often really.
Jasper and Banff were far from the touristy ski towns we thought they might have been, they were very picturesque and a long soak in the Hot Pools was just what was needed to get some of the camping dirt scrubbed off (for a day at least)! Horse riding by the river, taking in the sights from gondolas and trekking through the National park made for a nice break from driving.
Some of the group have gone off to do some city touring, while the majority have opted for more National Parks (we just can’t seem to get enough of these bears and mountains)!
The temperature has really heated up and without trying to jinx things, we have to say that we have been incredibly lucky with the weather so far, almost every place we’ve been we have been told ‘it’s the first fine day that it hasn’t rained all winter…’ And although our cold weather isn’t over for good, I think it’s now safe to say the -28° days are behind us.
We are now headed en route for Vancouver,
