Getting ready… (In Alaska)

Hi Everyone,
We are in Anchorage, Alaska, getting ready to head off on the 1st of May. The truck made it over safely from Sydney, Australia with no problems at all. It took 40 days by sea and it was waiting all off-loaded and ready for us to drive away with out so much as a scratch on it!
From Vancouver we transited straight to Anchorage, Alaska. It took 5 days of pretty hard out driving and although the days were long, it was wonderful to be here and the scenery was lovely. We made a slight detour to overnight at Hyder, Alaska’s smallest town. The locals said that at this time of year there normally isn’t any snow and not only has it hardly stopped snowing, but they had just had a dump of 34 feet - snow since they haven’t seen since the 70’s! For us it was fantastic, we’ve never encountered snow quite that deep before.
The frozen lakes are in their hundreds and the Mountain ranges are breathtaking – Canada and Alaska are going to be incredible in the scenery department, that’s for sure. We even saw 3 lynx playing close to the side of the road, all within 2 minutes of entering Alaska, and from about 10 meters away!
We now have a couple of weeks to put the finishing touches to everything and possibly get a bit of skiing or fishing in if there’s time before we begin!
We are planning to write a diary entry every 3-4 weeks if possible, depending on Internet availability. If you haven’t heard from us for awhile, don’t panic, we are just away from civilization for a bit (we’ll be doing that as often as we can)!
